Republicans Call For Investigation After Federal Agents Kill Minneapolis Man

A growing number of Republicans are pushing for an investigation into the tactics that federal immigration authorities are using in Minnesota after ICU nurse Alex Pretti was shot and killed over the weekend.Several videos of the incident on Saturday showed the 37-year-old holding his phone in one hand as he filmed Border Patrol activity. When Pretti tried to help a female observer who had been shoved by a federal agent, several other agents attacked him with pepper spray and wrestled him to the ground. At least one agent repeatedly shot Pretti, killing him and sparking more chaos.“This is a real tragedy. I think the death of Americans, what we’re seeing on TV, it’s causing deep concerns over federal tactics and accountability. Americans don’t like what they’re seeing right now,” Kevin Stitt, the Republican governor of Oklahoma, told CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday. “What is the endgame? What is the solution? And, you know, we believe in federalism and state rights, and nobody likes feds coming into their state,” he added. “And so what’s the goal right now? Is it to deport every single non-U.S. citizen? I don’t think that’s what Americans want.”A makeshift memorial was placed where ICU nurse Alex Pretti was shot and killed in Minneapolis on Jan. 25, 2026.Trump administration officials began spreading misinformation about Pretti almost immediately after he was slain, including that he “reacted violently” after “brandishing” a firearm. While Pretti was a legal gun owner with a permit to carry – and had a concealed handgun in his holster – video showed that he was not brandishing a firearm. And, agents disarmed Pretti before he was shot to death. Some Republicans are now calling for a deeper investigation into the incident.“There must be a thorough and impartial investigation into yesterday’s Minneapolis shooting, which is the basic standard that law enforcement and the American people expect following any officer-involved shooting,” Republican Senator Thom Tillis posted on X.“Any administration official who rushes to judgment and tries to shut down an investigation before it begins are doing an incredible disservice to the nation and to President Trump’s legacy,” Tillis added. Republican Senator Bill Cassidy said the events in Minneapolis were disturbing, but he called for a joint probe. “The credibility of ICE and DHS are at stake,” Cassidy posted on X. “There must be a full joint federal and state investigation. We can trust the American people with the truth.”The Trump administration’s misinformation about Pretti’s death has even sparked concern among conservative gun rights groups. In a post on X, the National Rifle Association called for an inquiry into the fatal violence that agents deployed against Pretti.“Responsible public voices should be awaiting a full investigation, not making generalisations and demonising law-abiding citizens,” the NRA wrote.According to local and state authorities, the federal government is refusing to cooperate with any investigation. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said Sunday that he still has not received any official information on Pretti’s death, and added that federal agents blocked Minnesota’s investigators from accessing the crime scene to gather evidence.Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt (R) has publicly called for a thorough investigation into the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement tactics in Minneapolis. With Pretti’s killing coming just weeks after federal agents in Minneapolis killed 37-year-old poet and mother Renee Good, polling shows a majority of the American public does not support the tactics used by ICE. Republican Senator John Kennedy told Bill Maher on Friday that Trump’s immigration enforcement is “polling right up there with toenail fungus.”“If I were President Trump, I would almost think about, ‘OK, if the mayor and the governor are gonna put our ICE officials in harm’s way, and there’s a chance at losing more innocent lives,’” Republican Representative James Comer told Maria Bartiromo on Fox News. “Then maybe go to another city and let the people of Minneapolis decide.”During his press conference on Sunday, Governor Tim Walz tried to appeal to Americans on both sides of the aisle, stressing that how the federal government was behaving in Minnesota should concern everyone.“I don’t care if you are conservative and you are flying a Donald Trump flag, you’re a libertarian ‘Don’t Tread on Me,’ you’re a Democratic Socialist of America – this is an inflection point, America,” Walz said. “If we cannot all agree that the smearing of an American citizen and besmirching everything they stood for and asking us not to believe what we saw? I don’t know what else to tell you.” HuffPost UK – Athena2 – All Entries (Public) Read More
