(AP Photo/Charlie Neibergall)Donald Trump has claimed “very good things” are happening between Ukraine and Russia right now – even though Vladimir Putin’s attacks continue. The US president appeared optimistic after the first set of trilateral meetings between Ukrainian diplomats and their Russian and American counterparts took place over the weekend. While there was no major breakthrough, US officials were reportedly encouraged by the discussions and more Abu Dhabi-based talks are expected this Sunday. But Trump’s claim ignores how Russia was attacking Ukraine even during those discussions.Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Russia deliberately targeted civilian train passengers in Kharkiv with drones over the weekend in an act of “terrorism”.Other Ukrainian officials pointed out that strikes had targeted the port city of Odesa, too.In this photo provided by the Ukrainian Emergency Service, firefighters put out the fire after Russian drones hit a passenger train in the Kharkiv region, Ukraine, Tuesday, Jan. 27, 2026. Meanwhile, assaults on energy infrastructure in Kyiv have triggered widespread blackouts in the capital, causing a humanitarian crisis as temperatures drop below freezing.Entire blocks of flats have been without heat of electricity for more than a month. The White House is yet to comment on any of this new aggression. The US president is desperate to resolve the war by any means possible, even if it means rewarding Russia for its ongoing invasion.Moscow has been dragging its heels over negotiations but Trump has mainly blamed Zelenskyy for not co-operating.The US administration has not given Ukraine any emergency energy funding to help Kyiv import liquified natural gas, unlike Joe Biden’s did last year. The president also overlooked how Russia came out of the Abu Dhabi talks insisting peace was only possible if Moscow occupied the whole of Ukraine’s Donbas region – which is a red line for Kyiv.Putin’s troops currently hold about 90% of the eastern territory, and a fifth of Ukraine’s total sovereign land. Evidently, Moscow wants more.Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev also mocked Nato and Trump in the wake of the talks, suggesting discussions may not have been so cordial after all. While sharing an article from Politico with the headline “Mark Rutte’s Trump flattery strains Nato”, the Putin aide said: “NATO soap opera: EU/UK members are jealous of Rutte’s ‘flattery’ to Daddy.”Nato chief Rutte stunned the defence alliance when he called Trump “daddy” last year while trying to keep the mercurial president on side.Dmitriev also referred to another article which detailed the tensions between France and Rutte over the power of Europe’s security, writing: “When children argue, ‘Daddy’ decides.”Related…Ukraine’s Allies Will Have To Face 2 Major Distractions At Pivotal Coalition Of The Willing MeetingFirst Trilateral Ukraine Peace Talks Ended Exactly As Expected – With Russia Demanding MoreVolodymyr Zelenskyy Hits Back At Trump’s Claim He Is Blocking Ukraine Peace Deal HuffPost UK – Athena2 – All Entries (Public) Read More
